"Liquid Comedy 101"

We sat on the floor of Steve's parents' house--laughing uncontrollably.

(Steve's not his real name but we'll get into that in a future column.)

It was 1979 and the five of us had just decided to call our troupe Liquid Comedy.

Listen to us on XM Radio!

We are still together today. Well, all except Steve (not his real name).

I work with many others and sometimes alone. My greatest joy, however, is getting together with Jim Folly, Tom Giannazzo and Kenny Savoy, and making some comedy magic.

Me with two funny men:
Kenny Savoy & Shelley Berman!

These funny fellows became regulars on my Comedy-O-Rama Hour for XM Radio, which featured such guest as Lewis Black, Al Franken, Bob Edwards, Norm Crosby and Shelley Berman.

More recently, we performed before an audience my new Fibber McGee & Molly and Duffy's Tavern shows which are available on Amazon.

Kenny Savoy in The New
Oldtime Radio Hour.

You can see video of us performing Duffy's Tavern here.

One of the funniest guys I know is Kenny Savoy. Kenny can do voices and read a script as well as any actor I know, but what makes Kenny special is is bright open upbeat personality. He lifts the energy of everyone he meets.

Me & Kenny improv on a a boat in Florida.

Kenny is also a great improviser. When we toured as Liquid Comedy--after the rest of us struggled before the audience with parodies of current TV shows and juvenile dialogues--Kenny brought down the house by pulling out his harmonica and ad-libbing a hilarious and clever blues song.

I can also count on Kenny as a close and trusted friend. I look forward to many more years of making people laugh with Kenny Savoy!

The Art of Audio #5: "I'm Serious!"

"I'm Serious!"

I sat on the couch next to Barbara Bush. It was the 2000, Lorie and I were at the Bush home in Houston, Texas interviewing the former First Lady for my radio documentary on Lady Bird Johnson, which won a 2001 NY Festivals Award.

Listen to my documentary here.

Mrs. Bush leaned in on me and asked me to briefly turn off my recorder. I oblige and she told me an off the record story about President Jimmy Carter. Sorry, I can't repeat it. :-)

You may think this an odd place for a comedian and cartoon voice actor. But the fact is I have two careers. One funny. The other serious.

I was the last person to
interview John Houseman.

My reports for National Public Radio have won me a number of awards and I have produced and directed hundreds of radio dramas.

My own plays, such as A Freneau Sampler: The Prose and Poetry of Revolutionary War Writer Philip Freneau, have toured before stage audiences.

The truth is I am a storyteller. Whether it's fiction or reality, comic or serious, I love telling stories that are positive, that uplift, inspire, or at least give comfort. There are plenty of horror stories out there, real and imagined.

I can't tell these stories alone. The support I get from the many writers, actors, and musicians I work with is invaluable.

Me with Katherine Graham at The Washington Post.
